The second season of the hit Batman origin story "Gotham" will appear on FOX within a few short weeks. Ahead of its airing, spoilers, speculations and synopses have circled the world wide web, suggesting that Det. James Gordon's fight against Gotham's criminal underworld won't be easily won. Veteran villain Penguin has demonstrated his will to commit sins, and newcomers Theo and Tabitha Galavan will enact their new plans to turn Gotham City into a hub for corruption.

A synopsis of Season 2 was recently released. The particulars reveal that Penguin will rattle the cages of the Gotham City Police Department and Gordon will seek to help him; young Bruce Wayne will explore his father's office; and the Galavans will make friends with a group of dangerous inmates from Arkham in the all-new episode, "Rise of the Villains: Damned If You Do,..."

Set to premiere Monday, Sept. 21, fans can all look forward to the manifestation of the Batman persona, the rise of the Joker, the vicious evolution of Barbara Kean, the appearance of Mr. Freeze and the many rogue characters who will be introduced throughout the sophomore season of the series. Also, the new Big Bads, the Galavans, have positioned themselves to command the criminal element of the city.

Many suggest that Jerome, seen in the first season, isn't necessarily the Joker. Instead, it's said that, over time, the show will present a number of characters that could eventually develop into the iconic, confident villain. Also, the future Riddler, presently known as Edward Nygma, could find a shaky romance during the second season, which showrunners will explore during the second episode, titled "Knock, Knock."

"On the heels of his reinstatement, Gordon is thrust onto the high-profile case tracking the deadly inmate escape from Arkham Asylum. Meanwhile, Galavan plans his next move, while Bruce asks for help from his father's old friend to unlock the secrets in his office, and Nygma asks out Kristin Kringle (guest-star Chelsea Spack) on a date," reads the publicly released synopsis for "Knock, Knock."

"Gotham" returns to FOX on Monday, Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. EDT.
