Apple CEO Tim Cook said the TV experience has not changed in decades. Cook says Apple plans to change the way people watch TV, and that is with apps.

During the Apple press event Wednesday, the new Apple TV was introduced. Apple TV will use Siri to help users decide what to watch and to control the device.

The new set top box for Apple TV will be more powerful, and it will include a new remote with more buttons and a touch sensitive surface. With the touch surface on the remote, Apple TV users will glide their fingers to scroll through titles until they find something they want to watch. When they find something, they simply take their finger off and select the program. A Siri button will activate Siri when users want to use voice control.

New screen savers will be used for the Apple TV. These high definition photos are actually movies, and they will change based on the time of the day. For instance at night, a lit up bridge with moving cars will be displayed.

With Siri, Apple TV owners can get very specific. They can tell Siri to show a specific scene from a TV show, show movies that only include a certain actor or show comedies from a specific year. If users miss a funny line from the show, they can ask Siri to rewind it and temporarily show captions on the screen.

A brand new operating system will be used for Apple TV, and it will be called tvOS. tvOS will be based on iOS, but it will be built for the living room. With this operating system, games and other apps will be included on the Apple TV.

A music game called Beat Sports will allow for gaming with the Apple TV remote. This game will be just like Wii U Sports, except with music.

There will be apps for sports, shopping, games and much more.

The new Apple TV unit will be equipped with the A8 chip, battery life up to three months, Bluetooth 4 capabilities and several sensors. There will be two models, the 32 GB model for $149 and the 64 GB model for $199. The older model of the Apple TV will continue to be available for $69.

tvOS is now available for developers to test their apps and start experimenting with the operating system. The new Apple TV will launch in October.
