While rumors continue to circulate as to who will be awarded the honor of portraying Captain Marvel in the studio's first female lead superhero film, eyes have now shifted toward "Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation" actress Rebecca Ferguson.

The news has arrived from Umberto Gonzalez over at Heroic Hollywood, who claims he's received a hot tip. His sources have proved credible in the past, making Ferguson a possible top candidate amongst the many names that have been referenced in the past for the role of Captain Marvel.

It's suspected that this role was the reason the actress opted to drop out of the running for the female lead in the upcoming "Gambit" movie, instead choosing to take the role of Anna in the adaptation of Paula Hawkins novel "The Girl On The Train."

Emily Blunt has also been rumored for the role of Captain Marvel in the past.

"I think, it's always for me, it's always about-and now, more so-what am I putting out there?" Blunt told Cinema Blend. "What would be interesting for me and what would be interesting for people to see. So, if it's an awesome part, it doesn't matter if it's a Marvel movie or a tiny movie, I'd be up for it."

Another big contender for the coveted role is MMA superstar Ronda Rousey, whose name has recently been in circulation, following some fan art that depicted her as the heroine.

"See her in that picture? Come on! You don't even need to think at this point," director Kevin Smith told TMZ. "There's an image; we can see it. She looks amazing. Lord knows she's one of the only people who would play a superhero that could actually beat the sh*t out of somebody."

Captain Marvel is expected to make her debut in an upcoming Marvel film, well before her own solo film slated for 2018.
