There was a time when "King of Fighters" was among the best-loved fighting games in the community. Now, SNK Playmore stages a new edition of the cult classic to claim their place on the top. The developers drummed up more excitement for the upcoming "King of Fighters XIV" by releasing the first video teaser.

According to Cinema Blend, the announcement for the '90s game was made during the pre-Tokyo Game Show conference of Sony. The trailer was first released on SNK's official website. The website also showed that the developer is planning to release three notable trailers, with the second and third videos marked as "coming soon."

The video began by counting up from the earliest iteration of the game in 1994 to the latest XIII, which came out in 2010. The 40-second teaser was short and sweet, but fans will be able to glimpse some in-game footage of the fighting. Well-known "King of Fighters" characters Kyo Kusanagi and Iori Yagami get in a few punches as the only two fighters featured in the short trailer.

As seen in the video clip, the developer designed the game in full 3D. While some gamers may find the graphics a bit outdated for the sharp new consoles, it's likely "King of Fighters XIV" will still undergo massive development and fine-tuning before its release date. Hopefully, the next two trailers will reveal crisp animation and more characters included in the game's roster of fighters.

"This brand new KOF numbered series title features high-quality 3D visuals, however staying true to the gameplay roots of the series," SNK Playmore said in a statement, according to a report from Game Spot.

It's interesting to see how the "King of Fighters," a mid-1990s game, will translate into the modern gaming consoles and community. After all, the first game of the franchise was released 20 years ago. "King of Fighters '94" was a mix of original characters and well-known ones from other SNK games like "Fatal Fury" and "Art of Fighting." Since then, the developer was able to upgrade the game with a new edition annually, until the early-2000s. In 2005, the game stopped being titled after the year of its release and instead was called "King of Fighters XI" as the 11th edition of the series.

Notable spin-offs include the "King of Fighters: Maximum Impact" back in 2004, which was SNK's first attempt to design the first 3D installment of the series.

"King of Fighters 14" for PlayStation 4 will be launched in 2016.
