Alexander Gustafsson has the chance to become the Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight champion next month, but the Swedish mixed martial arts superstar also has another goal in mind.

Gustafsson, who holds a 16-3 MMA record with all three defeats coming inside the UFC Octagon, admitted that he is still aching to get a rematch with former light heavyweight world champion Jon Jones.

Gustafsson gave Jones a run for his money during their title fight at UFC 165 in 2013, but "Bones" eventually kept his title via unanimous decision. Most analysts believe that the fight could have gone either way and calls for a rematch escalated.

However, Jones opted to face Glover Teixeira at UFC 172 in April 2014, where the 28-year-old champion also won via unanimous decision. Following the victory, Jones eventually gave Gustafsson a rematch, but the fight was called off after the latter sustained a knee injury.

Gustafsson said that up to this day, he is still very eager to go face-to-face with Jones inside the Octagon -- not just for his personal interest but also for fans who are also calling for a rematch.

"I'd probably fight Jon Jones again," Gustafsson told MMA Junkie. "That's the fight everybody wants to see. That's the fight I want to have again. I would do it for myself, but I would mainly do it for my fans."

But before thinking of a rematch with Jones, Gustafsson has to deal with Daniel Cormier in their upcoming showdown at UFC 192 on Oct. 3 at Toyota Center in Houston. He needs a win in order to erase the bitter memory of his first-round knockout loss to Anthony Johnson at UFC on Fox in January.

If Gustafsson wins, the rematch with Jones could happen despite the fact that the former world champion is under indefinite suspension after being involved in a hit-and-run accident.

UFC president Dana White made it clear that Jones will get an immediate title shot once he is cleared to return to the Octagon because the former pound-for-pound king did not lose his title inside the Octagon. He was just stripped off his title after the hit-and-run incident.

"He comes right back and fights for the title," White said of Jones via Yahoo Sports. "After all, Jones is one of, if not the greatest fighter to ever live. And with that title comes certain exceptions. He hasn't had the time that Anderson Silva has had, but he's the most dominant champion."

According to MMA Fighting, Jones will have a plea hearing in Albuquerque on Sept. 29 for the felony charge against him after leaving the scene of the accident.
