The Call of Duty Twitter feed tried to create a fake war to promote the newest game in the franchise. It did not go well.

According to Yahoo, Call of Duty developer Activision shocked its 2.8 million followers on Twitter on Tuesday by creating a fake war to promote the newest installment.

The Call of Duty account tweeted out the following:

This was followed by multiple reports of a conflict that seemed all too real.

Later, the Twitter feed announced that the earlier reports were all just a promotion for the new Call of Duty game.

The promotion did not receive the response Activision had hoped. Many people on Twitter who were fooled by the reports began to criticize the company soon after the promotion was revealed.

To make things even worse, the tweets described an incident that resembled real events two months ago, when a pair of massive explosions in China's northern city of Tianjin killed over 100 people and devastated the city.

Activision has not issued an apology for the ill-fated tweets.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III will be available for the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 on Nov. 6.
