When “Elementary” returns to CBS in November, Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) will not only be dealing with sobriety, but will also confront the added stress of meeting up with his estranged father.

Executive producer Robert Doherty spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the chaos that will ensue when Morland Holmes (John Noble) comes into town.

“Once he arrives, Sherlock does not appreciate the attention or the distraction that his dad represents,” Doherty said.

“For him, it’s too little too late," the EP added. "This is a father and a son with a very complicated history. I’d say for at least a couple decades, Sherlock’s father has been out of sight, out of mind.”

A teaser for the upcoming premiere shows father and son on a rooftop, and gives some sense of the imperfect patriarch’s persona, as he tells Sherlock, “You’ve made a mess. I’m here to fix it."

Morland is certainly right about the mess.

After his recent relapse and the resulting mayhem that followed, Holmes is fully expecting to be dropped from the New York Police Department. He is even ready to perhaps do some hard time.

While prison does not seem to be a problem for Sherlock, being deprived of detective work is no good for his sobriety.

“The work he does with the police is a kind of replacement therapy,” Doherty said. “In being able to throw himself into cases, he’s able to force himself to think about things other than narcotics.”

Whatever happens with the police, Sherlock will see to it that his working relationship with Joan Watson (Lucy Liu) is not jeopardized. Doherty said that in the first episode, Holmes will be looking for other agencies where he and Joan might be able to continue to work together.

“Elementary” returns to CBS on Nov. 5.
