The buddy action-comedy film series "Lethal Weapon" is getting a TV series makeover and is now on track to make its debut on broadcast network FOX.

According to Deadline, the series is expected to follow in the footsteps of another buddy cop remake, "Rush Hour." It will be a reimaging of the world created by writer Shane Black and director Richard Donner back in 1987, when the first film came out as smash hit.

The new series will follow Martin Riggs, a former Navy SEAL and Texas cop, as he makes his move to Los Angeles to start a new life after the death of his wife and child.

When he arrives, he gets partnered with veteran officer Roger Murtaugh, who recently suffered a minor heart attack and is trying to keep his life stress free to avoid another one.

The new series mirrors the original film with a few key differences. Riggs (Mel Gibson) was a former Special Forces operative in the Army and a narcotics sergeant who was reassigned when he suffered a psychotic break while on the job. He had also lost his wife in a traffic accident and is always on the edge. Murtaugh (Danny Glover) had just celebrated his 50th birthday when they were partnered.

There is a strong demand for action and hero movies in the television market these days. The networks have been green lighting several projects based off popular movies and franchises, which includes "Taken," "In The Line Of Fire," "RED," "Behind Enemy Lines," "Training Day," "Jack Ryan" and "Minority Report." Other TV adaptations include "The Notebook," "Urban Cowboy" and "Limitless."

There has been no word yet on casting for the series or when it will go into production. A release date has not been set yet, either.
