A teaser for Monday's upcoming episode of “Switched at Birth” suggests that the show will focus heavily on romance -- both welcomed and unwelcomed.

Episode 18 of Season 4, titled "Accommodations of Desire," sees Bay (Vanessa Marano) ready to get into a new relationship, smiling broadly as a suitor takes off his shirt and plants a kiss on her.

But for Daphne (Katie Leclerc), romantic problems abound, as her correspondence with a guy she volunteered with on a recent trip to Mexico begins to mess up her relationship with Mingo (Adam Hagenbuch).

In an interview with Talk Nerdy With Us, the 22-year-old Marano spoke about everything her character endures in Season 4, describing the drama as a necessary kind of chaos.

"Well, she’s a mess in the beginning. A hot, hot, hot mess," the actress said. "I think this season is really about Bay taking back her life. She did a lot of things for other people at the beginning of Season 4. She wanted to move to California for Emmett (Sean Berdy), she took the fall for Daphne. This season is like her taking back her life and doing things for her.”

Although Marano described the relationship her character had with Emmett as beautiful at some point, she feels that it is ultimately dysfunctional and not sustainable.

"I think what people love so much about them is that there’s this destiny aspect about them," she said.

According to Marano, fans of the show love that the couple was able to understand each other and make their love work, despite Emmett's deafness and Bay's ability to hear, for a while at least.

"That’s beautiful and romantic," she said. "But when they’re actually together they just end up hurting each other which is terrible.”

The next episode of “Switched at Birth” airs Oct. 12 on ABC Family.
