"Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer on Tuesday announced a new version of the popular romance story between the mortal and the vampire, swapping Edward and Bella's genders this time around.

The 41-year-old writer revealed the news of the story on "Good Morning America." The characters of Edward and Bella will be replaced by Edythe and Beau in the novel, titled "Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined." The new story is now available as bonus material as part of the 10th anniversary edition of "Twilight," according to USA Today.

In addition to wanting to release something special for the series' 10th anniversary, Meyer said she also wanted to flip the story due to her annoyance over complaints by many readers that Bella's character was too much of a damsel in distress.

"A question that had come up at a lot of signings and other things was about Bella being a damsel in distress. And it's always bothered me a little bit, because anyone surrounded by superheroes is going to be in a bit of distress," Meyer said. "And so I thought if I switched it around a little bit to see how a boy does, and you know, it's about the same."

Even though the characters' genders change and some of their traits seem to differ in this book, Meyer maintains that the love story remains quite the same.

"The further you get in the more it changes because the personalities get different," Meyer said. "It's just a love story, it doesn't matter who's the boy and who's the girl."

Diehard fans of the series may be disappointed to find out the new story Meyer has released isn't "Midnight Sun," which is the story of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan told from Edward's perspective. Twelve chapters of this narrative previously leaked in 2008, which resulted in Meyer halting the release.

"Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined" is currently available for purchase online and in bookstores nationwide. The cover of the book features an image similar to the original "Twilight," but with a green apple instead of a red one.
