A community in Tennessee has been shaken after an 8-year-old girl was shot and killed by her 11-year-old neighbor when she refused to show her new puppies.

The incident took place Saturday evening in a trailer park in White Pine when an unidentified boy used his father's shotgun to fatally shoot MaKayla Dyer, a third-grader at White Pine elementary school, reports USA Today.

According to Jefferson County Sheriff GW "Bud" McCoig, the fifth-grade boy was talking to MaKayla and two of her friends as they were playing outside of the window of his mobile home. He asked Dryer if he could see her two new puppies. However, when she refused, the suspect retrieved his father's 12-gauge shotgun and shot her in the chest from the window, McCoig said.

"It is a sad, sad situation," said McCoig, according to The Guardian. "We hope this don't ever happen again."

The victim was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital. Meanwhile, the 11-year-old boy was brought into custody on Monday and has been charged with murder as a juvenile.

Witness Chasity Arwood, who also lives in the trailer park, said that MaKayla was playing across the street with neighbors outside the boy's home when she overheard their conversation.

"He asked the little girl to see her puppies. She said no and laughed and then turned around, looked at her friend and said, 'Let's go get the --' and never got 'puppies' out." The boy had shot MaKayla with a shotgun, Arwood said.

On Monday, White Pine School principal Bill Walker said that the tragedy is "not just the school that's hurting, it's the whole community."

"We remember her smile and her beautiful face and her interaction with her classmates and with all of us as a staff."
