Apple has officially announced the all-new Beats Pill+ Bluetooth wireless speaker. The device is the first offering from Beats by Dr. Dre ever since the audio company was acquired by the Cupertino-based tech giant last summer.

According to Business Wire, the Beats Pill+ has a sophisticated but simple design that is durable enough for users to throw in their bags while on the go. It has an active two-way crossover stereo system that optimizes the sound field for more dynamic range and clarity while playing music from different genres. The device charges in three hours, which is worth 12 hours of battery life.

Furthermore, the Beats Pill+ is complemented with an app for iOS or Android devices. The companion software lets users control the speaker via their smartphones. It also has the capacity to control music from Bluetooth sources as well as sync two Beats Pill+ speakers together to produce either simultaneous or dedicated right or left audio playback.

"When you obsess about sound the way that we do at Beats, portable Bluetooth speakers can be very tricky," said the chief of Apple's Beats division Luke Wood. "We spent countless days, weeks, months testing for that perfect combination of form and function — small enough to travel but still big enough to feel the emotion of the music. That's what you get with Pill+."

The Beats Pill+ weighs 1.5 pounds or 0.68 kilograms, making it larger than the original Beats Pill released in October 2012 and slightly smaller than recently canceled Beats XL. It can be remembered that Apple voluntarily recalled all Beats XL units due to overheating issues.

The Verge recently had an in-depth analysis of the new Apple speaker. After hearing brief song demos from different genres, the testers called the Beats Pill+ "the most attractive looking and sounding speaker that Beats has ever made."

The device's magnificent sound quality is due in large part to its active two-way crossover stereo system. Basically, this means two amplifiers are directly built into its speakers, one for each pair of tweeter and woofer. This setup better assigns the varied frequencies of music onto to the right-side portion of the device, which ultimately results in improved sound quality.

The new Apple speaker is fitted with both USB and Lightning ports on its rear end that can be used to charge iPhone as well as other compatible devices.  It has a metallic Beats logo that acts as a play and pause button while its power button and volume toggles have a rubberized design.

The Beats Pill+ Bluetooth wireless speaker will come in black or white models. It will be available via the Apple Online Store and authorized Beats retailers for $229 starting November.
