The wait is finally over, as the long anticipated Star Wars Battlefront Beta went live today at 1 p.m. ET on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Battlefront community manager Sledgehammer70 took the twitter last night, letting gamers know they'd soon be able to test out the new action title from Dice and Electronic Arts.

As with open betas from previous titles, Battlefront offers a teaser of the content to the come with the full title. Players will have the opportunity to try out three game modes. The first is Survival Mode, a small-scale PvE surge battle on Luke Skywalker's home world, Tatooine. Next is Drop Zone, an 8v8 showdown on the molten planet, Sullust. Finally, there's Walker Assault, an incredible recreation of the opening battle on the icy landscape of Hoth from "The Empire Strikes Back".

Patricia Hernandez of Kotaku reported on her early experience with Battlefront, praising the visuals and immersion into the "Star Wars" universe.

"Fans will appreciate this attention to detail outright," Hernandez said.

"I on the other hand have no real nostalgia for 'Star Wars,' but the games do such a good job of building this world, that I still feel completely seduced by it. It's one thing to look at Tatooine. It's another to walk through it and feel the rock crumble underneath your boot. I feel a sense of wonder playing Battlefront... when I'm not trying to shoot other people in the face, that is."

Other features of note included the fun yet somehow authentic-feeling jetpacks, the unique reloading system (which has a "cool down" mechanic rather than a traditional reload), and the ability to fight classic characters such as Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. Most reviewers also praised the aforementioned Walker Assault mode, which has up to 40 players engage in a epic face-off between the Rebels and the Empire on the planet Hoth.

The beta is available now and requires 8gb to download on PS4 and Xbox One, and 11gb on PC.
