Sixty-eight year old Phil Jackson, a legend in NBA basketball coaching, was reportedly offered a position to coach with the New York Knicks.

Jackson is the person behind the six NBA titles of the Chicago Bulls (1989-1998) before ultimately leaving in 1998. After a one-year break, he worked with the Los Angeles Lakers and unbelievably gave them three successive NBA titles.

James Dolan, owner of the Knicks, met with Jackson to offer him a consulting position, although sources said that it was more than that. An unknown NBA source said that Jackson has promised to arrive at a decision by next week. Phil Jackson vowed not to coach again after he left the Lakers in 2004 due to frequent clashes with all-star guard Kobe Bryant. However, before he retired in 2011, many Lakers fans wished that Jackson will return as a consultant to the franchise.

Jackson has always preferred to work from the sidelines of a basketball game. Although he has contemplated holding a consulting post with the right team, he has never handled a front-office position. The USA Today wrote that Jackson wished to be in a front-office role to assist in shaping a team but not with the Lakers. (The Lakers are currently managed by Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak.)

Well-known free agents will definitely be attracted by Jackson's reputation. This was seen when Houston got Dwight Howard last summer, when some speculated he would have stayed under Jackson.

Phil Jackson holding a non-coaching position is not a surprise to basketball players. Pau Gasol has said that Jackson's knowledge of basketball is extensive but his age may no longer allow him to do well as a coach.

Both the Knicks and the Lakers are having bad seasons. The Lakers were embarrassed by the Clippers in their last game, scoring only 94 against the Clippers' 142.
