Kevin James is officially returning to TV comedy on CBS, the same network that made him a star.

According to Deadline, the new series will be a family comedy and will feature James in the lead role. The project does not yet have a name, but it will certainly be primed for viewers of those who loved watching him on his previous hit show, "The King of Queens."

James comedy has always resonated well with audiences in the family demographic. "Queens," although it was not entirely a family comedy series, featured many of the elements inherent to a series of that genre.

The new series is still in its earliest stages and will not debut on the network until the 2016 - 2017 TV season. James is co-writing the script with executive producer Rock Reuben, whom he frequently collaborates with. Bruce Helford has also been brought in as a showrunner for the series.

CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller talked about the new project with Deadline.

"We're beyond thrilled to be back in business with Kevin James!" Geller said.

"He's an incredibly talented star on every screen and every stage, who appeals to a broad audience. We can't wait to start working with Kevin and the amazing comedy talents of Bruce Helford and Rock Reuben on this exciting new project."

James got his big break playing a loose variation of his "Queens" character on a recurring basis for "Everybody Loves Raymond." He later spun the character off and starred in his own show, which turned out to be "The King of Queens." Ray Romano also did cameos on that show as his own character from "Raymond" as well.

"Queens" ran on CBS from 1998-2007, and James has had quite a successful career since its cancellation. He has starred alongside Adam Sandler in a few films, which includes "Pixels," "Grown Ups" and "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry." He has also had breakout hits with "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" and "Zookeeper."
