The Flyme 5.0 update is now available as an OTA download for owners of the Meizu MX5. The firmware is sure to bring noticeable changes as it weighs 936MB, not counting unpacking and installation.

A Meizu MX5 user from GizChina reminded co-owners that the company's servers are overloaded at the moment, causing the download process to be very slow. It is highly recommended that owners wait for a few hours or a day before pressing the update button.

Due to the firmware's file size, it is also advisable for owners to have at least 50 percent battery life on their Meizu MX5. This is to prevent download and installation interruptions.

Some of the highlights of the Flyme 5.0 Update include:

  • Split-screen mode
  • New UI functionality for longer presses
  • Auto-arrange icons by shaking the desktop
  • Improved drop-down notification bar lay-out
  • New music lock screen that can directly display covers and lyrics.
  • More powerful Smart SMS service menu
  • Better battery life optimization
  • Overall stability and performance improvements

There are also improvements to Gallery, Search, Browser, App Store, Clock, Weather, Game Center, Calendar and Mail. Even the Calculator feature has been revamped with smarter conversion operations. Scroll down the GizChina link above for the complete Flyme 5.0 Update change log.

The Meizu MX5 is the first device to be updated with the Flyme 5.0, but the recently launched Meizu Pro 5 has the distinction of having the Flyme 5.0 as its built-in OS.

Specs of the Meizu Pro 5 include a 5.7-inch 1080 x 1920 AMOLED display, Samsung's quad-core Exynos 7420, Mali-T760 MP8 GPU and a non-removable 3,050 mAh battery, per GSM Arena.

Meizu's latest flagship offering is fitted with a 21-megapixel rear camera that supports dual-LED flash, laser autofocus and phase detection. Meanwhile, its five-megapixel front facing unit can capture 1080p selfies and videos at 30 frames per second.

The Meizu Pro 5 has two memory variants: one with 3GB of RAM and 32GB storage space, which retails for roughly $439, while the other with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage space that costs $486.

MobiPicker reported that the release date of the Meizu Pro 5 was delayed for six days due to issues regarding the handset's NFC back cover.

Meizu was then quick to announce compensations for customers who have pre-ordered the Meizu Pro 5. They were given free accident insurance for the device worth $31. Those who pre-ordered the 32GB version got a free $20 headset while those who opted for 64GB version received the same headset plus Flyme coupons.

All in all, Meizu cashed out $1.5 million as compensation for all initial Meizu Pro 5 buyers.
