The arrival of the new Qualcomm processor has been anticipated by the entire smartphone circuit. Now, the company finally introduced the flagship product: the Snapdragon 820 with a slew of new features promising to revolutionize the market.

According to a report from GSM Arena, the Snapdragon 820 brings Qualcomm back to its roots of custom-designed CPU cores. The new processor has a quad-core CPU with 64-bit Kryo cores that can manage up to 2.2 GHz. Graphics get a boost with the Adreno 530 GPU, plus the X12 LTE modem and the new Hexagon 680 DSP.

So, what are the benefits of these impressive features on upcoming smartphones?

The Snapdragon 820 is reportedly more efficient than ever. Its custom quad-core CPU will improve the performance of the processor two-fold and the battery life is expected to significantly be upgraded as well due to the Hexagon 680 DSP. Aside from better battery life, charging will also be speedier with the Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0, which is four times faster than regular charging and 38% faster than Quick Charge 2.0.

Graphics performance will also see a marked improvement as well as compute capabilities and power usage. The brand new modem will be able to support Cat.12 LTE downloads (with 600 Mbps peaks) and Cat.13 uploads (with 150 Mbps peaks), tri-carrier aggregation for downloads and two-carrier aggregation for uploads.

The new chipset is expected to debut in a slew of Android smartphones in 2016. Among the selection is reportedly the much-anticipated Samsung Galaxy S7.

According to a report from G for Games, the South Korean tech company is planning to release half of the upcoming flagship model with the new Qualcomm processor and the other half with its own Exynos 7420 chipset.

During a recent earnings call, Qualcomm CEO Steve Mollenkopf revealed that the company is expecting a large number of premium smartphones to carry the new chipset by the upcoming year, according to a report from PC World.

"High-end devices with the new chip will start contributing to Qualcomm's revenue in the second half of the company's financial 2016 year," Mollenkopf said, adding that around 60 prototype devices are already being tested with the brand new Snapdragon 820 chipset. However, it has not yet been confirmed whether all of these will be commercially available.

Tirias Research principal analyst Jim McGregor said that April 2016 could see an onslaught of new devices powered by the Qualcomm processor. Announcements for these gadgets may come during the Mobile World Congress in February.
