Three games in the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers took place on Thursday, all with rather surprising results.

The first big shocker was Bolivia's complete and utter annihilation of Venezuela 4-2. To be fair, Bolivia was home for the game and had every advantage. However, few would have expected Venezuela to capitulate so quickly and continue without a single point in qualifying.

Ecuador also picked up a huge win at home over Uruguay, keeping the team at a perfect nine points out of nine through three games. No other team has managed the feat thus far, and Ecuador, which has excellent speed along the wings, is looking like an early contender to qualify for the World Cup in 2018.

While the match between Brazil and Argentina was the most anticipated, the game of the night turned out to be Colombia and Chile's matchup, a game that saw the defending Copa America champs start to look increasingly vulnerable. Colombia was the team with attacking poise early on, but Chile slowly took control of the game with its possession style.

A late goal at the end of the first half meant that Chile was in pole position to come away with three points at home.

But José Pékerman finally altered his tactics for the first time since the World Cup last summer. Instead of forcing Colombia to try and control the ball and play a tiki-taka style that does not suit it in the least -- Colombia's midfield is not good at stringing more than three passes together -- he went back to the strategy that had worked well in last summer's World Cup and should never have been abandoned: the counter.

Colombia is built with speed, and its big goal in the second half was the result of a speedy counter against a Chilean defense that is as weak as ever. As Luis Muriel charged at the goal from the left, he drew three Chilean defenders to the flank, leaving the center of the box wide open for James Rodríguez to control the ball (after making a poor first touch). He then did a full 360, before firing it through the legs of another defender and scoring the tying goal. The goal was the result of Colombia overwhelming Chile's defense, and the moment exposed the weaknesses of the defending Copa America champs.

Colombia was rather good in the second half, looking like a team on a mission and making Chile look vulnerable.
