One of the first classic 3D RPG-shooters, and an inspiration for well-loved titles like BioShock that came after, the 20-year-old System Shock is getting a full remake for the modern age. And there's talk of System Shock 3 someday being made as well.

That's according to non other than Stephen Kick, the CEO of Night Dive -- the company behind the bionic-enhanced man versus power-mad AI cult classic PC games, System Shock and System Shock 2.

In a long interview with FastCompany (via PCWorld), Kick divulged that his studio had acquired the full rights to the System Shock franchise and was now developing a full remake of System Shock.

The remake is of course slated for PC, but part of the plan reportedly also includes a console version. There may even be a port available for mobile devices, or at least mobile versions of some other Night Dive classics.

Kick said he had been working with Robert Waters, the original concept artist for the 1990's classic, to reimagine the look of System Shock for the modern day. And apparently things are looking good (pardon the pun).

"Seeing the difference between [Waters's] artistic abilities back then compared to know, and his ability to reinterpret those ideas, it's just been really exciting for us," said Kick.

As for the possibility of a next-generation sequel -- a System Shock 3 -- Night Dive's head of business development Larry Kuperman didn't rule it out.

But it sounds a little more difficult and a little further in the future than the full remake of the original System Shock for now. "To really do another game in that series is going to take resources and time and commitment that we don't have," said Kuperman, "and it's really not our core business."

Night Dive would have to work with a larger game publisher to make it work, but it doesn't sound impossible. As Kick noted about his reinvigorated game studio, "Every day is filled with surprises."
