This year has been a great stretch for video games, both creatively and commercially. Many popular franchises outdid themselves with their latest titles while a surprising number of original IPs took the industry by storm. But with only one month left in the calendar year, it's time to look forward to 2016.

It's no secret that PlayStation 4 has been dominating the console market thus far, but will 2016 be the year of the Xbox One? According to Yahoo! Games, the gaming lineup for each console will factor heavily in the equation. To bring you up to speed, here's a list of the most anticipated console exclusives next year.

PlayStation 4

  • "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End"

PlayStation 4 sales are expected to surge this holiday season due to the release of the final entry in the "Uncharted" franchise. In a prior Latin Post report, several retailers are offering discounted "Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection" PlayStation 4 bundles to prep fans for "A Thief's End." Meanwhile, Naughty Dog said it has at least two more games left for the PlayStation 4. Read the full story here.

  • "Horizon: Zero Dawn"

The upcoming action-adventure role-playing game was showcased at E3 back in June. It's a well-designed game with gameplay elements drawing inspiration from "Assassin's Creed" and "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim."

  • "The Last Guardian"

A lot of expectations surround this title as its predecessor, "Shadow of the Colossus," is widely regarded as one of the best games ever made.

  • "No Man's Sky"

This first-person adventure survival game takes open-world gameplay to a whole new level. It features a seemingly infinite universe with countless planets to explore.

Xbox One

  • "Gears of War 4"

The "Gears of War" franchise has seen better days, but this hasn't stopped its latest title from being one of the most anticipated games of 2016, at par with PlayStation 4's "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End."

  • "Quantum Break"

Created by the same studio behind "Max Payne" and "Alan Wake," it's easy to see why Xbox One owners are anxious for this original IP.

  • "Crackdown 3"

This third-generation third-person open world shooter game "will blow up the way you play games today," as seen its Gamescom 2015 trailer. Watch the full video here.

  • "ReCore"

Not much is known about "ReCore," though it could be the kind of upstart project that Microsoft will try to build on as the Xbox One moves forward.

  • "Tacoma"

Polygon noted that the game's aesthetic is similar to the underwater city from "BioShock." The title is developed by the same minds behind the critically acclaimed 2013 adventure game "Gone Home."
