Microsoft's Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL are now available sans the carrier tie-up.

According to Windows Central, Microsoft now offers an unlocked version of the Lumia 950 XL for $649 and the Lumia 950 for $549. The Lumia series will be sold in two color variants: white and black, and shipping date for the units will start on Dec. 11.

It may not be a Black Friday treat for fans, but Microsoft announced that the Lumia 950 XL will be made available in retail stores starting Nov. 26. The offer is an initiative from the Microsoft company to address other consumers who want to acquire the handset without the need to get tied up to a specific carrier.

According to Phone Arena, the Lumia 950 can be ordered online. Unfortunately, a great demand for the Lumia 950 XL may have prompted the company to have it sold in their retail stores because its online slot only says, "Email me when available." Both handsets carry the latest Windows 10 OS. If you're still wondering which one to buy, you may want to look at their specifications to know if they meet your requirements.

The Microsoft Lumia 950 XL has a 5.7-inch screen with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 and a 20-megapixel primary camera. It has 3GB of RAM powered by a 3300 li-ion battery. Expected to be released this December, the Lumia 950 XL handset weighs around 165 grams with an approximate thickness of 8.1 millimeters. The handset runs on Windows 10 OS and has 32GB of internal storage as well as a micro-SD card slot.

The Lumia 950, on the other hand, has a smaller screen at 5.2 inches with a 1440 x 2560 resolution. It also has a 20-megapixel primary camera and 3GB of RAM. The unit is powered by a 3000 mAH li-ion battery and weighs a total of 150 grams. It's slightly thicker than the Lumia 950 XL with at 8.2 millimeters. It also has a micro-SD card slot and 32GB of internal storage.

Fans can now start pre-ordering the Lumia 950 online and the Lumia 950 XL on Nov. 26. It may be a high price for a retail freedom, but consumers who opt to buy the unlocked Lumia series don't have to worry about monthly fees.
