In a special new two-episode event on the BBC, Idris Elba is back as John Luther in a follow-up to the Season 3 finale of "Luther," which aired back in 2013.

According to Deadline, this two-episode special will feature the famous London detective back in action, as he is pulled back into a life he once left behind, following the aftermath of a major event.

Luther is back to track a new serial killer. His tortured past catches up with him yet again, but this time, it will be given a new name and face.

Elba had previously hinted that the storyline for this special would not just be some random case, but rather a major event that will take place in the fictional world.

"I think there were bigger challenges when he lost his wife and his best friend," Elba said. "That was a huge pinnacle and something that it took him a long time to get over. And in this [special] there is something similar that happens to him that is definitely traumatic."

Luther was last seen in the Season 3 finale, standing on Southwark Bridge. In the time that has passed since 2013, his character has tried to move on from his dangerous obsessions that had left him in a bad place. He is attempting to pursue a normal life. But the brilliant, talented detective is forced to come back and help the police find a new killer, who has apparently ignited an explosive event.

Also starring in the special are Laura Haddock ("Guardians Of The Galaxy"), John Heffernan ("Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell") as a sadistic cannibal, Patrick Malahide ("Game Of Thrones"), Michael Smiley ("Doctor Who"), Darren Boyd ("Veep"), Rose Leslie ("The Last Witch Hunter") and Dermot Crowley ("Babel").

The special will air on BBC One in the U.K. on Dec. 15 and in the States on BBC America on Dec. 17.
