Two of Brazil's biggest actors, Bruno Gagliasso and João Vicente de Castro, took a stand against homophobia and machismo by sharing a kiss on stage at the GQ Men of the Year awards in Rio de Janeiro on Nov. 27.

While the kiss was quite an unexpected surprise, the fact that both Gagliasso and de Castro, who were both presenters at the ceremony, are heterosexual made the stand that much more meaningful.

Following the incident, Gagliasso, who is married to Brazilian actress Giovanna Ewbank, shared a photo of the kiss on his Instagram account.

In the caption for the image, Gagliasso called out the "card-carrying macho men" and "hypocritical and prejudiced" people. He explained that there is nothing shameful or wrong with two men showing love and affection.

De Castro, who is one of the founders of the Brazilian video production company Porta dos Fundos, shared his affection for Gagliasso by calling him "my brother" and sharing photos of the two during rehearsals for the awards and posing together after the ceremony.

According to The Huffington Post, in an interview with Brazilian publication Quem, the 33-year-old actor added that the kiss was meant "to show that we are working against intolerance, small-mindedness and hypocrisy."

This isn't the first time Gagliasso has been part of conversation surrounding the LGBT community. The actor starred in the Brazilian telenovela "América," which was set to feature the first gay kiss on Brazilian television in November 2005. The kiss was cut at the last minute, leading to backlash from viewers.

Even though Brazil legalized same-sex marriage in 2014, crime against members of the LGBT community remains high. It was reported that 200 members of the LBGT community were killed that same year.

Regardless of the crime rates, the country is known for its LGBT Pride festivals and celebrations.
