DC Comics television series "Supergirl" has gotten a full season order from CBS, which was rumored to be the requirement for a possible crossover with the hit CW series "The Flash."

According to a CBS press release, the series, starring Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman, will have a total of 20 episodes for its first season.

Kara was sent to Earth to protect Superman, but due to unforeseen events, ended up hiding her powers for years. Eventually she is unable to hide them any longer and chooses to use them to save National City on a daily basis.

According to Entertainment Weekly, a nine-episode back-order is traditional for such a series. However, other shows announced to be getting a full season orders, like "Code Black" and ABC's "Quantico," only got five and six-episode orders, respectively.

The popular series, which, along with Netflix's "Jessica Jones," is breaking barriers for superhero themed shows with females as the leads, currently averages 11.24 million viewers. The series has 2.8 million viewers who fall into in the adults 18-49 demographic.

With a nine-episode order, Kara may now find herself meeting "The Flash's" Barry Allen and the STAR Labs crew for a possible crossover episode between the two DC Comics shows, therefore connecting the DC television universe, reported Bleeding Cool.

The crossover could lead to a major ratings jump for "Supergirl," which, despite positive reviews, has slipped in ratings.

"Supergirl" also stars Calista Flockhart from "Ally McBeal" fame as Cat Grant, Kara's boss; Mehcad Brooks as Daily Planet photographer James Olsen; Chyler Leigh as Kara's adoptive sister Alex Danvers; Jeremy Jordan as Kara's friend and coworker Winn; and David Harewood as DEO head Hank Henshaw.

The series was developed by "Arrow's" Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler. Also serving as executive producers are Andrew Kreisberg and Sarah Schechter.
