As the Christmas season draws closer, ABC recently announced that it will be airing the iconic "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and another special this coming Monday night to celebrate the show's 50th anniversary.

Not only will viewers be treated to a major flashback as they will be able to watch the 1965 holiday special, but there will also be a program titled "It's Your 50th Christmas, Charlie Brown," which will also air on ABC at 9 p.m. ET. before the holiday special, NPR reports.

Indeed, "A Charlie Brown Christmas" has been running for half a century and Pop Matters previously revealed that the show wasn't supposed to reach that many years on television because of previous network conflicts.

The executive producer for the special, Lee Mendelson, revealed that in 2006, CBS network executives said that they were not pleased when "A Charlie Brown Christmas" was screened in 1965.

"They said, 'We'll play it once and that will be all. Good try,'" Mendelson told Pop Matters. Mendelson and director Bill Melendez even "thought we had ruined Charlie Brown forever when it was done. We kind of agreed with the network. One of the animators stood up in the back of the room -- he had had a couple of drinks -- and he said, 'It's going to run for a hundred years,' and then fell down. We all thought he was crazy, but he was more right than we were."

Meanwhile, USA Today reports that it is a good thing that the show kept running until now since the show caters to the enjoyment of both adults and children, especially during the holidays as it is all about what people experience during the Christmas season.

Whether it is the famous Christmas tree that Charlie Brown made out of a sad-looking twig or the peanuts dance and caroling, USA Today reports that the holiday wouldn't be complete without "A Charlie Brown Christmas."

"If you want Christ in Christmas, you pretty much have to turn to Charlie," Robert Bianco said per USA Today.

Meanwhile, actress Kristin Chenoweth told USA Today that "It's part of tradition -- not just for my family but for so many.
