The Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig) promoted the IEEE 802.11ad protocol in May 2009, and completed the 1.0 WiGig version in December 2009. It released its certification ready, "the version 1.1 specification" on June 2011. With so much need for Wifi, Wigig promise to be coming soon next year. Wifi is needed for more than just work, everyone depends on it, be it entertainment, shopping, and many other areas, thus, it promises to offer up to 8Gb/s of throughput even when connected to a single client device.

In order to avoid fragmentation, Wifi Alliance has made it clear that there needs to be some agreement between the companies before they want to launch the device. Edgar Figueroa, president and chief executive of the Wi-Fi Alliance, said to Bit-tech at the programmer's unveiling, 'Wi-Fi has delighted users for more than 15 years, and WiGig now gives users even higher performance in a rich variety of applications unleashing an unparalleled Wi-Fi experience.'

According to It's A Gadget, WiGig offers better performance over short range. It is an advantage for Virtual Reality, as it uses a chip with laptops and phones that support VR. It is the first kind of  Wifi chip that boosts speed to stream VR, which is no different from gaming consoles or VR headsets. It meets the needs where high bandwidth is difficult to reach a user for enterprise applications, monitoring, gaming, VR and more.

Around 180 million WiGig chipsets will be shipped to smartphones next year as forecast by ABI research team. Also, communication technology companies and other access points are expected to jump on the WiGig bandwagon. As of now, there are only a few companies certified with WiGIg devices, but if WiGig enters the market by next year as they plan to, 802.11ad could become rather commonplace in the near future.

WiGig is bringing the next step in the evolution of the internet, but you'll have to wait for this great  Wifi revolutionizer.
