Two suspects and one hostage were fatally wounded after a bank in Stockton, California was robbed Wednesday. Three robbers abducted three women as they fled the bank, tossing two out of the getaway car as they fired at police during a high-speed chase.

Officials responded to a report Wednesday afternoon of a robbery at a Bank of the West branch. When they arrived on the scene, they saw the three men taking the women hostage at gunpoint, according to Stockton police officer Joe Silva.

The suspects then climbed into a bank worker's SUV and sped off, beginning a 45-minute pursuit between officials and the robbers. During the chase, two of the women, both bank workers, were injured as they were thrown out of the SUV. One of the women was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound while the other woman suffered an injury from a grazed bullet.

In a news conference late Wednesday, Police Chief Eric Jones said that the firefight caused significant damage to police cars and surrounding houses.

"It was such a chaotic ... fluid situation, really one of the most dangerous, tense situations that a police officer could go through," Jones said. "The firing never stopped ... They were trying to kill [the officers], no doubt."

When the car's tires were shot, police exchanged shots with the suspects when they stopped at an intersection. Officials said the robbers were firing AK-47 style rifles and had additional ammunition strapped to their bodies.

By the end of the fight, one of the robbers was dead; police found the body of the third hostage, a bank customer, in the SUV. The remaining two suspects were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds, where one of them later died.

"There was a lot on the line and the officers responded appropriately," Jones said.
