Charlie Hunnam isn't blind, deaf and dumb when it comes opinions about him being Christian Grey in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey film adaptation. Hunnam knows he is not what a lot of fans wanted. In fact, his own "Sons of Anarchy" co-stars even laughed at him when he revealed the news.

When it was announced that Hunnam, who is best known as Jax from FX's "Sons of Anarchy,"  would play Christian Grey, his co-stars were as surprised as the novel's fans who expected Matt Bomer or Ian Somerhalder to be casted, though maybe not as outraged.

"When he told me that it was happening or that he was considering it, I just howled," Maggie Siff, who plays Jax's wife Tara, told Entertainment Weekly. "I mean, I think we all did. We're all like, 'What?'"

After further consideration about Hunnam and how seriously he takes his career, Siff changed her mind.

"Then I talked to him seriously about it," Siff said. "I think he's very brave to do it. He doesn't do anything unless he feels it deep down. He's not going to do something because all of his agents are telling him to do something. That's what makes me think it stands a chance of being really, really great."

Katey Sagal, who plays Gemma on the show, also thinks that Hunnam will do his best to do the role justice.

"The choice was not an obvious one for him, but for good or bad, he will throw himself 100 percent in," she said.  "I don't know if I want to see all that, but maybe."

Kurt Sutter, "Sons of Anarchy" creator, also thinks Hunnam has a bright future, despite the naughty things he is soon to do on the big screen.

"We're thrilled for Charlie," Sutter said. "He works hard [and] constantly challenges himself and his craft. He is a star in all the right ways."

Meanwhile, Hunnam is acknowledging fans' opinions but still thinks he stands a chance of making Fifty Shades of Grey readers happy.

"There are so many fans of that book, and I know that on the surface, I'm probably not what everybody imagined," Hunnam said. "Because reading is so personal and people bring a character to life in their imagination, they feel ownership over that character. That's daunting if I allowed myself to think about it too much. I'm taking it very seriously and intend to explore the nature of who this character is, what motivates him and also dress up nice and look good in those suits."

Siff has faith that Hunnam will turn the film into a success. "If he has that conviction going in, then you know it'll be great," she said.

Fifty Shades of Grey will be released Aug. 1, 2014.
