City officials in Ferguson, Missouri, released on Thursday the racist and religiously insensitive emails that were exchanged between the city's former top court clerk and two high level police officers.

The emails, which were published by The Washington Post, contained racially offensive material about African-Americans, President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama, and religious jokes about Muslims. The emails were sent and received by former Ferguson court clerk Mary Ann Twitty, Ferguson Police Captain Rick Henke and former police Sgt. William Mudd from 2008 to 2011.

In one message that was sent on April 19, 2011, Twitty forwarded an email that included an image of President Ronald Reagan feeding a baby monkey and the caption, "Rare photo of Ronald Reagan babysitting Barack Obama in early 1962."

Another email was sent by Twitty to both men as well as a third recipient that said, "There's a new Muslim clothing shop that opened in our shopping center, but they threw me out after I asked if I could look at some of the bomber jackets."

In another email sent in May 2011, Mudd forwarded a message to Twitty that reference a black woman's unborn child as a criminal.

"A black woman in New Orleans was admitted into the hospital [for] pregnancy termination. Two weeks later she received a check for $5,000. She phoned the hospital to ask who it was from. The hospital said, 'Crimestoppers,'" read the message.

In addition, an October 2011 email included a photo of a bare-chested group of African women along with the caption, "Michelle Obama's High School Reunion."

The emails were first discovered during an investigation conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice that concluded that the Ferguson police department had a history of engaging in discriminatory practices targeting African-Americans.

Following the DOJ report, Twitty was fired from her position in connection to the emails while the officers resigned last month, reports CNN.
