"Xena: The Warrior Princess" may be heading back into the television screens. Rumors are circulating that the Lucy Lawless-original, action-adventure TV series is in the works and NBC, along with Universal International, are already looking for a screenwriter to bring the story back to life.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the people in NBC and Universal are interested in doing a remake of the hit 90s show. The producers are now busy at work looking for someone who will pen the script for the reboot series, which is currently in the early stages of development.

Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, who were both part of the original series as the executive producers, are reportedly working close with NBC and Universal to make the new series successful.

However, while the original producers are said to be very hands-on with the project, it is yet to be determined if Lucy Lawless, who played the titular character Xena, will return to the series.

Since the upcoming TV show is set to be a "modern reboot," it is unclear if Lawless will reprise her role. But reports are saying that she and other supporting characters are being eyed for smaller roles as well as support behind the camera for the series.

Lawless recently attended the San Diego Comic Con, where she promoted her upcoming TV series, "Ash vs. Evil Dead."

At the event, the actress talked about a reboot of her famous warrior role on TV and made it clear that many are still interested to see the franchise return.

"I don't know what the holdup is," said Lawless to Hit Fix. "It's about who's got the rights [to the series. But that's a piss poor excuse anymore. I think they just... find who's got the rights. Freakin' pay it."

She added, "It's better to have 80 percent of something than 100 percent of nothing. Don't waste this opportunity. Reinvigorate the franchise... They're fools not to bring it back."

But while the actress has made it clear that she is keen on seeing the series back on television, a reboot at this point might not just happen.

Lawless quashed the rumors that a remake of "Xena: The Warrior Princess" is in development at NBC on her Twitter account.

"Sorry, friends! News of a #Xena reboot is just a rumor. I'd love it to happen one day but it's still wishful thinking stage," posted the actress on the social networking site late Monday evening.

NBC and Universal International have yet to comment on the reports.
