The upcoming "Power Rangers" movie will feature the character names of the original heroes.

According to an official tweet from the film's account, "IT'S MORPHIN TIME, Jason, Kimberly, Zack, Billy & Trini! #PowerRangersMovie, coming 2017!"

Jason was always the original Red Ranger, Kimberly the Pink one, Zac the Black Ranger, Billy was the Blue and Trini was the yellow. Tommy was the Green Ranger in that series, though he has not been revealed as a character in the new movie.

Based on the cast members on IMDb, Naomi Scott will play Kimberly, Dacre Montgomery will be Jason, RJ Cyler will be Billy, Ludi Lin will be Zack and Becky G. will be Trini.

The names and characters evolved over the numerous series. "Power Rangers Zeo" saw newcomers such as Adam, Rocky, Tanya, Kat and Trey arrive on the scene. Tommy and Jason were holdovers from the original series.

In the ensuing series "Turbo," Tommy, Kat, Adam and Tanya were joined by Justin.

From there on, it has been a process of bringing in new teams with new character names and actors.

It should be interesting to see how the new movie harkens back to the original series and who the main villain ultimately winds up being.

In the original series the team had to do battle with evil witch Rita Repulsa and her minions.

The movie, produced by Saban, will hit theaters on Jan. 13, 2017. Dean Israelite will direct the feature. "Power Rangers" will be Israelite's second feature after "Project Almanac." He has also directed a few short films including "The Department of Nothing" and "Magician."

During an interview with IGN, the director noted that the script was "really cool, contemporary, mature but still playful, buoyant and fun take on the material, and was updated in a really interesting way."
