The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced their annual Oscar nominations with a number of big surprises and big omissions. Among the omissions was the lack of diversity in the nominations, with few Latinos or blacks in the acting category and the lack of diversity in the directing branch.
Research compared the percentage of Latinos and Blacks in private and public prisons in nine states. Each state, at different percentages, had higher rates of people of color residing in private facilities than public facilities. Inmates released from private prisons experienced recidivism at an average rate three percent higher than public prisons.
The American Dream promises a number of things, one of those things being a home …accented with an optional white picket fence. However, less than half of Hispanics in America have been able to seize that portion of the “Dream,” due greatly to the fact that minorities are more likely to be denied loans and they are less likely to apply for conventional mortgages for the same reason.
