On the fall finale (Episode 9) for Season 11 of "Supernatural," Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) got a little more than he bargained for, while his brother Dean (Jensen Ackles) was elsewhere getting enlightened.

According to TV Line, the midseason finale was a cliffhanger to say the least. Sam had been praying to God for help in defeating the Darkness, and all this time, he kept getting visions of Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino), caged in hell.

In the end, he felt he knew what God was telling him to do through the visions. He knew he had to go back and speak with Lucifer. It was, after all, Lucifer who was there when God put the Darkness away. So it stands to reason that if God would not make himself available to Sam, then Lucifer was the only one who could help him.

Meanwhile, Dean was busying hunting down Amara (Gracyn Shinyei), or The Darkness, following her trail of carnage trying to get God's attention. She slaughtered a town and a congregation in her pursuit to get him to answer. All she really wanted to do was talk to him, but he was not answering. She then learned that only the dead get to talk with God.

Dean tracked her through the rampage, eventually finding himself abnormally attracted to her in a "supernatural" way. Most fans knew Dean was compelled by their common bond, the Mark of Cain.

He then got spirited away and found himself in the middle of nowhere next to Amara. The two had a chat, and in the end, he stabbed Amara, but to no avail. She told him they are destined to be together, but he was not having it. Angels came down and tried to fight her, but she barely wasted a breath defeating them. Then light from above came down and she welcomed its embrace.

In the final moments of the episode, Sam enlisted the help of Rowena (Ruth Connell) and Crowley (Mark Sheppard) to get into hell to speak with Lucifer. But when he finally got to the cage, Lucifer revealed to Sam that it was him, not God, inside his head giving him the visions. Sam then found himself trapped inside the cage with the Dark Angel.

Fans will have to wait until after the holidays to find out his fate.
