The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the seven finalists that will compete for the Makeup category.

Among the finalists is Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "The Revenant," which is getting a lot of buzz and which is sure to be a Best Picture nominee in January. The movie was shortlisted alongside "Black Mass," which has obtained a lot of buzz for making Johnny Depp unrecognizable and "Mad Max: Fury Road," which is already the front-runner to win Best Director at the Oscars.

Will Smith's "Concussion" was also on the list as well as "Mr. Holmes," which stars Ian McKellan.

Finally, the last two films that made the shortlist are "Legend" and "The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed out the Window and Disappeared."

The Makeup category is still the only category at the Academy Awards that only allows three nominees. The Academy also has an affinity for prosthetic effects in this category and usually awards it to Best Picture nominees. This year "The Revenant" and "Mad Max: Fury Road" are clearly the front-runners but "Black Mass" could take it as well.

The past three winners in this category have all gone to Best Picture nominees. Last year "The Grand Budapest Hotel" took the award over "Foxcatcher" and "Guardians of the Galaxy," and in 2013 "Dallas Buyers Club" won the award over "Jackass: Bad Grandpa" and "The Lone Ranger." In 2012, "Les Miserables" took home the award and beat out "Hitchcock" and "The Hobbit: An Expected Journey."

The Academy has already announced the qualifying songs as well as the Visual effects shortlist. It also announced that only 305 films will qualify for Best Picture. The Academy will next announce the qualifying scores as well as the shortlist for Foreign Films.

The Academy Award nominations will be announced in January.
