Rumors about the upcoming Huawei P9 smartphone first saw the light of day in October when the handset's panel designs got leaked on Twitter by reliable tech tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer. The image showed cut outs for two camera lenses and a circular LED flash, hinting the device will feature two rear-facing units.

Now, a report from China has confirmed the dual-camera set up while also revealing an updated specs sheet of the P9.

According to Mobile-dad, as translated by TechNewsToday, the smartphone sports a 5.2-inch AMOLED screen with an impressive 1440 x 2560 Quad-HD resolution display. The company's brand-new Kirin 950 chipset is under the hood, providing an octa-core CPU, the Mali-T880 GPU and 4GB of RAM. All that plus the dual-camera setup on the back.

Two rear-facing units on one handset have become the newest craze in the smartphone industry, following the popularity of fingerprint scanning technology and 3D Touch. The P9 is the latest proof that major OEMs are eager to test the novelty's consumer demand.

Samsung was said to include the feature on the upcoming Galaxy S7, but the Korean tech giant's grasp on the technology was still in its early stages. UberGizmo reported that mass production of the dual back camera set up for the Galaxy S7 would have delayed the smartphone's intended grand unveiling in January 2016.

It's should be noted that future Samsung offerings could still brandish the technology, albeit at a later date, most likely in mid-2016.

HTC and LG have already outed smartphones with two back cameras such as the HTC One M8 and the LG V10. Although sales have been solid thus far, these devices have yet to gain wider public recognition. Perhaps, Huawei and Samsung might turn things around for the technology moving forward.

The reasoning behind the arrangement is ingeniously simple. It works like human eyes. Two eyes see twice as much image with greater depth of field. A smartphone with dual-camera set up captures images almost like mid-range DSLR cameras.

Going back to the P9, the latest rumors claimed the device will debut in March. A premium version of the P9 is said to launch at the same time. If true, this will come as no surprise as prior leaks showed one variant branded "LTE" while the other was labeled "DELUX."

There have been murmurs suggesting the higher-ended model will be called the P9 Max. Specs include a 6.2-inch screen with 1440 x 2560 Quad-HD display, the Kirin 950 SoC, 4GB of RAM and 64GB internal memory.
