Sony recently announced that it has sold 5.7 million PlayStation 4 units during the holiday season, bringing total sales to nearly 36 million globally. At this point, the PlayStation 4 is the fastest selling system in the company's history.

The sheer volume of PlayStation 4 gamers might explain why PlayStation Network is currently experiencing all sorts of server problems. Though unconfirmed, the speculation isn't hard to believe considering the recent figures Sony is throwing around.

"We are absolutely delighted that so many customers have selected PlayStation 4 as the best place to play throughout this holiday season and that the PlayStation 4 community is growing more than ever," Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House said in a statement shared with GameSpot. "We remain steadfast in our commitment to deliver innovative entertainment experiences."

The press release was filled with all kinds of interesting tidbits, including the fact that PlayStation Plus subscriptions have increased by 60 percent in the last quarter of 2015. This comes as no surprise since the online service has practically become mandatory for gamers who want to get the full PlayStation 4 experience. Aside from providing multiplayer gaming and cloud save storage, PS Plus offers monthly games that come with the $50 price point.

Sony already has some great PS4 games available in both digital and physical markets, but one of the main reasons why the holiday season saw such a huge boost in sales is the lineup of highly-anticipated titles arriving in 2016.

Some of the upcoming PlayStation 4 games aren't technically full exclusives. For instance, "Street Fighter 5" and "No Man's Sky" will soon be available on PC while other games will eventually be playable on Xbox One, TechTimes reported.

Here's the complete list of PlayStation 4 games set to release this year:

Microsoft also has a solid lineup of Xbox One games for 2016, but Sony has done a better job of building anticipation and getting its titles in front of the masses. Not only that, Sony is working on a thing called PlayStation VR, a virtual reality device that is literally turning more than just a few heads. Learn more about it here.

For its part, Microsoft said 2016 will be a busy stretch for Xbox games. The Washington tech giant recently shared an outline of exclusive titles arriving this year on Xbox One and Windows 10, as per Latin Post.
