Tim Kring's sequel miniseries, "Heroes Reborn," will not be renewed for a second season.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt confirmed that the series, originally planned for only one season but opened to the possibility for more, would not continue past its initial 13 episodes.

"That was always the plan, unless Tim woke up one day and said, 'Oh, I have another chapter to tell,'" Greenblatt said at the Television Critics Association on Wednesday. "But I think we're coming to the end of the world, maybe. Stay tuned."

"Heroes Reborn," which premiered to reasonably decent ratings, has since seen its viewership decline.

Kring talked with THR last summer, discussing potential ways he could continue the "Heroes" franchise.

"The premise of the show is elastic enough to reboot," Kring said in July. "It has a basic premise - there are an undetermined number of people waking up to the idea that they have these powers - and we can always start with people's origin stories. Plus, the world always needs saving and that is a continual premise of the show."

If the series had continued, it likely would have featured an entirely new cast of characters.

Greenblatt said he wasn't made aware of any plans for Kring to continue the series, and that as far as he knew, "There's no more incarnations of 'Heroes' coming."

The original "Heroes" series first aired in 2006, garnering much attention and becoming something of a television phenomenon. The show captured a wide fanbase with its comic book-inspired premise. The plot centered on the lives of ordinary people suddenly endowed with superpowers. The series could even claim responsibility for sparking the careers of actors Zachary Quinto and Hayden Panettiere.

However, the show began to lose viewers, suffering from poor writing and a seemingly directionless plot. It appears that "Heroes Reborn" failed to alleviate the problems of its predecessor, and with plenty of other hit superhero shows currently on air, it failed to stand out.

The second to last episode of "Heroes Reborn" will air Thursday, Jan. 14 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
