With the official announcement of the PS Plus free games list for February 2016 coming next week, it looks like the official kibosh has been put on a possible free release of a PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita game, previously rumored to be part of next month's giveaway.

Two games looked promising for the PlayStation Plus February 2016 free games list by nature of their release dates. "Not a Hero" and "Crypt of the Necrodancer" are two very popular indie games coming to the PlayStation 4 on the first Tuesday of February, the same day the PS Plus free games are released on the PlayStation Store.

But now that hope is dashed, and PS Plus members are left with the guessing game again. Product-Reviews got the lead on the most unfortunate news. After the official Twitter account for "Crypt of the Necrodancer" was hyping its upcoming release on PS4 and PS Vita, a PS Plus fan straight-up asked if the game would be free on PlayStation Plus.

"No, it will not be free," was the devastating, but frank, answer from the makers of the critically acclaimed indie platformer.

Of course, that leaves the possibility of "Not a Hero," scheduled for a release date on Feb. 2, to be a free release for PS Plus members. But it certainly doesn't support the "first as free release" theory.

And to be frank, the possibility of free access to "Not a Hero" is simply less exciting than a PS Plus free deal on "Crypt." There are still rumors around Resident Evil HD for PlayStation 3, Shovel Knight for PS4 and PS Vita, or Metal Slug 3, but it looks like "Crypt" is out of the running for sure.

What do you think? Will there be a AAA title coming on the PS Plus free list next week? Could another hit indie title be coming as a cross-buy on PS4 and PS Vita? Are you sick of the selection PlayStation has put up for free in the last few months? Let us know in the comments below!
