Apple might be bringing back the 4-inch version of the iPhone with an odd name: the iPhone 5se.

The iPhone 5se was first spotted in a photo in a forum posting. The new phone is expected to have the same 4-inch screen as the iPhone 5, but with a similar design to the current-generation iPhone 6s, TechRadar reports.

Strange Numbering System

The iPhone 5 was released back in 2012. Since then Apple has released the iPhone 5s in 2013, the iPhone 6 in 2014 and the iPhone 6s in 2015. Apple also released large versions of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s and called them Plus versions, but the 4-inch screen never returned.

The internal specifications of the upcoming phone are expected to be new, despite the downgrade in name. The iPhone 5se is expected to use the same Apple A9 and M9 processors packed inside the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Even though the phone will have a smaller screen and a lower price tag than the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, it will perform just as well.

Small Storage

According to reports, the iPhone 5se would be offered in a 16GB variation, a storage size many iPhone fans were hoping Apple stops offering since the phone can fill up quickly. Buyers would be able to purchase versions of the iPhone 5se with larger amounts of storage space too.

A 4-inch iPhone or a cheaper version of the iPhone 6 has been a common topic of discussion since the iPhone 6 was released in 2014. The iPhone 6 features a 4.7-inch screen, and iPhone users with smaller hands have asked the company for a smaller model of the latest smartphone.

The iPhone 5c was a variation of the iPhone 5 that used plastic materials and cheaper components. It was expected that Apple would someday release an iPhone 6c model with a 4-inch screen and a lower price.
