Juan Manuel Marquez plans to fight two more times before officially calling it quits this year.

Marquez, whose name was recently mentioned as a possible opponent for Miguel Cotto via trainer Freddie Roach, hopes to fight in May and September before calling it a career.

‘El Dinamita’ has been indisposed since May 2014. His last fight was against Mike Alvarado at the Forum in Los Angeles, which he won via unanimous decision. Marquez has been plagued by knee problems and is believed to have been undergoing rehabilitation since then.

"The knee is doing well. I think that in the coming days, there might by some important news. That is my wish, to do two more fights. Let's see if the body responds and gives me what I need. I do not want to rush anything, but that is the idea that I have in mind, to say goodbye to boxing after 30 years of being an amateur and a professional boxer," says Marquez via ESPN Deportes.

Aside from Cotto, Marquez was also in consideration for a fifth fight against rival Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao was looking for payback on the Mexican boxer for handing him a stunning KO loss on the sixth round back in December 2012.

Marquez and company were reportedly not interested despite the fact that the Mexican could have taken home a lot of money for a fifth installment of their storied rivalry.

While nothing has been made official for now, Marquez has preference to stage his return fight at the Azteca Stadium or the Mexico City Arena.

"That's what I'd like [to do]. Let's see how things go. I want to fight in Mexico, maybe at Azteca Stadium or in the Mexico City Arena, but we have to see how things will go - but for now, that's what I want," he adds.

With a date and place in mind, the only thing left now is who he may face. The only thing he revealed is that he wants to fight for the welterweight world championship via Boxingscene.com.

A look at the welterweight champions as of today shows Kell Brook for the IBF, Keith Thurman for the WBA and Danny Garcia for the WBC.

The WBO title is currently vacant but will soon be filled depending on the result of the Sadam Ali vs. Jesse Vargas tiff that could happen this March if negotiations prosper, as per Boxingscene.com.

Marquez may have a lot of options but his plans would largely depend on the state of his knees and the necessary time to prepare for a big fight. Being out two years places his conditioning in question.

He would need to buckle down and start whipping himself back to fighting shape if he is serious about fighting this coming May.
