This 2016, the technology arena has been flourishing with new tech products and services. And as the latest technology aims to revolutionize the world, the sports realm is also evolving with hi-tech games.

Sporting events may appear very different in the future. While technology creates new forms of entertainment, tech-savvy and augmented reality games are soon expected to emerge.

Here are the top 5 futuristic sporting events that are getting attention.

1. Indoor Skydiving

While adventure seekers try the vertical wind tunnel to test your human flight skills, some people have considered it as a sport. In fact, Business Insider revealed there's an entire sport dedicated to float around in wind tunnels called, "Bodyflight."

In this sport, athletes, who can either participate in solo or in teams of four, are judges by a panel of experts as they complete a certain number of maneuvers and flips. And some competitions are featured on sport networks such as ESPN.

 2. Robot Soccer

Soccer is one of the most popular sporting event around the globe. And now, it's not only David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi that fans are cheering on.

At the RoboCup World Championship, robots have been competing in full-fledged soccer games. The 20th competition will occur in June. And during the RoboCup 2015 championships in China, Australia's University of New South Wales team was hailed as the winner.

3. Professional Drone Racing

Professional drone racing is indeed a 21st Century sport. And since competitive video gaming is a professional sport that generated more than $700 million annually, Drone Racing League CEO Nick Horbaczewski hopes that drone racing will become a digital NASCAR for drones, Daily Herald noted.

"One of the great things about drone racing is it sits between the virtual and the real -- it's almost like a video game," Horbaczewski told Tech Insider. "The pilots talk a lot about feeling like the drone or sitting in the cockpit of the drone, but it's real life and the drones are flying around."

The first drone racing will be held in Miami on Feb. 22.

4. Giant Robot Battles

Remember Hugh Jackman's movie, "Real Steel" and Disney's "Big Hero 6" film? Well, it has given futurists some idea that robot fights can be a sport. Now, a U.S. company called MegaBots, which makes human-controlled 15-foot-tall robots, held an international robot battle as they aim to create a new sporting event.

"Our real vision has always been to start a league of these giant robots," MegaBots co-founder Gui Cavalcanti previously told Tech Insider. "That has always been the drive."

5. Simultaneous Race Car Driving in Virtual Reality and in Real Life

In December, two professional drivers have tried racing each other in race cars while wearing virtual reality headsets. Despite having no plans yet to turn this into a regular sport, futurists still saw this kind of sport in the future. However, a lag in virtual reality could have some serious consequences.
