Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson has accused Ted Cruz of resorting to "dirty tricks" to win the Iowa Caucuses Monday night.

The Texas senator topped the other Republican hopefuls, earning 28 percent of support, at the Iowa Caucus. In comparison, the retired neurosurgeon earned just 9 percent, putting him in fourth place behind Donald Trump and Marco Rubio.

Following Cruz's win, Carson blasted the Cruz camp for spreading false rumors about him at the caucus, claiming that he was suspending his presidential campaign.

"For months, my campaign has survived the lies and dirty tricks from opponents who profess to detest the games of the political class, but in reality are masters at it," said Carson in a statement issued Monday night that did not name Cruz specifically, reports Politico. "Even tonight, my opponents resorted to political tricks by tweeting, texting and telling precinct captains to announce that I had suspended my campaign -- in some cases asking caucus goers to change their votes."

During an interview with Fox News on Tuesday, Carson also accused Cruz of purposely misleading his supporters and pointed to a tweet from Republican Rep. Steve King, who is backing Cruz, which said, "Carson looks like he is out."

Carson said that his supporters were told "voting for me was wasting their vote, and that they should reconsider," adding that the other side of using the process to execute "dirty tricks."

In response, Cruz spokesman Rick Tyler tried to defend their campaign, telling MSNBC on Tuesday morning that the campaign simply repeated what Carson had said.

"It's just false. We simply as a campaign repeated what Ben Carson had said in his own words," Tyler said. "He said after Iowa he was going to go back to Florida for a couple of days and then he was going to go to D.C. to the prayer breakfast. And what that told us was he was not going to New Hampshire. That's not a 'dirty trick.' That was really surprising by a campaign who was once leading in Iowa saying he's not going to come to New Hampshire. That's a news item."
