As the second season of "Fear the Walking Dead" premieres tonight (April 10, 2016), show creators admit they are left with overcoming a fine balancing act.

"There is no source material, so we do get to make it up as we go along," said executive producer Gale Ann Hurd. "But I think it's important for it never to veer into the totally unexpected just for shock value."

That includes not falling into the trap of killing off characters just for the sake of trying to tantalize the masses.

Series Adding new Characters This Season?

To that end, word is the show could actually be adding to its cast count once Season 2 officially kicks off tonight, Sunday April 10, 2016 and has already signed Dougray Scott as a regular.

Beyond that, Hurd is tight-lipped about what viewers should expect in Season 2.

"The dividing line [for the survivors] has to be, "If it's your or me, it's going to be me every time. I'm not going to save you and put myself at risk."

More cast additions could also be coming courtesy of "Flight 462," the "Fear" spin-off which explored the horrifying impact of a zombie outbreak on a plane across 16 mini-episodes.

Big Changes for Certain Characters Could be Coming

Even among returning cast members, Hurd adds that the transformations some of the characters will undergo this season could be eye popping.

"That's the great thing about TV - and the opportunities in TV these days - because it's serialized, because people can catch up, you can take characters to very different places," she said.

She later added, "We start every season not with a plot arc, but with character arcs - and once we've figured out the character arcs, the plot naturally develops. And that's very different from the old days, when TV was very much procedural."

Meanwhile, details about Scott's character are being tightly guarded, though he is rumored to be on tap to appear in at least several episodes.
