Facebook revealed plans to add 1,500 new emojis to its Messenger app, all aimed at better catering to its diverse body of users.

The new emojis come roughly a year after Apple's bulk addition of characters to its iOS. Still, Facebook maintains that Messenger is the first platform to feature such emojis as a female police officer, runner, pedestrian, surfer and swimmer.

App Users Will all now see the Same Thing

Facebook also notes that it is making changes to how emojis are displayed in the app. In times past, some users would see replacement emoji characters that were native to their device, but now all users will see the same ones.

Company officials add such changes will ensure that none of its users will see "broken-looking black boxes or emojis that just don't make sense."

Users will now also be able to choose skin tone and gender for emojis.

"Nearly 10 percent of mobile sends in Messenger include emojis," noted developers. "However, not all platforms have kept up with emoji standards as they've evolved - which means sometimes the emoji you wanted to send wasn't the one that showed up."

With the changes, choices will now be so diverse, users will be able to choose emojis representing red heads for the first time.

All the changes will start to take place later this June.

"Tap the new emoji icon at the left of the composer to find just the right emoji," developers added. "It's now easier than ever to toggle in between the regular text keyboard and the emoji keyboard."

Google Changes Include 13 new Emojis

Earlier this month, Google engineers designed a set of 13 emojis that they insist better represent females in world of work. The new designs include healthcare workers, scientists and businesswomen and have been presented to the Unicode consortium, the body that approves and standardizes emojis.
