La Liga got off to an interesting start in its first week with some surprising results, entertaining matches and solid performances from the best players in Spain. Here is a breakdown of how it went down.

Best Match

Sevilla and Espanyol played an intoxicating 6-4 match that featured three blown leads in the first half between the two sides. Eventually the home team broke away scoring, four straight to build a 6-3 lead it would never relinquish.

Best Player

Luis Suarez scored three goals, but Lionel Messi was at his finest scoring twice, creating an assist and essentially leading Barcelona through its debut match with tremendous command. Throw in his terrific goals and you have the top star without any doubt.

Messi's first goal of the season was pure brilliance with the superstar taking the ball on the edge of the box, running at the defense and then firing the long shot right into the far corner to give Barcelona a lead it would only build on from there.

Real Madrid vs. Barcelona

Real Madrid won its opener 3-0 thanks to two goals from Gareth Bale. A day earlier Barcelona managed a dominant 6-2 win with three goals from Luis Suarez, one from Arda Turan and two from Lionel Messi.
