As Mexico celebrates its Independence Day on Friday Sept. 16, crowds of people will come together to watch the reenactment of el grito de la independencia in Mexico City. Check out some of the top Mexican Independence Day quotes as the day approaches and learn where you can live stream El Grito.

 El Grito in Mexico City

El Grito means “the Cry.” Each year, there is a reenactment in Mexico City of the time when father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang the bell of the parish calling Mexicans to rise up against the Spaniards on September 16, 1810.

Mexico’s president comes out in the Zolcalo – Mexico City’s main square – and names all Mexican heroes and finalizes by shouting “Viva Mexico” three times as he stands on a balcony and rings a bell. Watch Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto do the honors this year.

It is not clear how the crowd in Mexico City will react to the president after he signed legislation making same-sex marriage legal in all of Mexico, prompting anti-gay protests and counter protests. Will the crowd show their president some love? Or will he get booed off of the balcony?
