After receiving a cancellation notice by ABC, "Nashville" was saved and given a second life by CMT. Now, the musical drama will be airing its 5th season with a big change that will not only be reflected in the general background of the show but on the characters as well.

Season 5 highlights Will Lexington

Fans may agree that one character in need of some special attention is Will Lexington. Will's storylines revolve mainly around his sexuality and giving little-to-no attention to everything else in his life. One producer of "Nashville" is guaranteeing that Will is going to get the same treatment as every other character, and states that he is more than just a gay man.

As per Cinemablend, "Nashville's" executive producer Marshall Herskovitz recently said that making Will Lexington a more fully-realized character is going to be a top priority in the 5th season of the musical drama. Herskotiz gave hints that Will is going to receive a great storyline in Season 5 but understandably kept further details to a minimum.

Will's storyline

Chris Carmack's Will Lexington is like most characters on the show; he is a country musician. But he's also a gay man, which seems to be what most of his prior storylines are focused on. During the earlier seasons, he was in the closet and was involved in a false marriage, running around with various guys before finally coming himself out to his friends.

Will's Struggles

According to Taste of Country, Will has had various romances, most notably falling in love with a particular songwriter. Will eventually come out to the world about his true gender in a press conference, and then had to fight for his rights and to be able to find a label that is willing to represent an openly gay country singer.

"Nashville" will come back for Season 5 on January 5, 2017, Thursday, at 9 P.M. EST on CMT.
