The latest comScore shows that although Google's mobile operating system Android continues to dominate the U.S. market, Apple remains the top smartphone OEM.

According to comScore, an average 52.5 percent of smartphones in the United States ran Android during a three-month period ending April 2014. The statistic represents an increase of 0.8 percentage points from the three-month period ending January 2014. Apple's iOS, meanwhile, ended April with an average U.S. market share of 41.4 percent, a drop of 0.2 percentage points from the period ending January.

Microsoft came in third with 3.3 percent in April, an increase, and BlackBerry followed with 2.5 percent, a loss. Nokia's Symbian, a relic of the past, captured the last 0.2 percent with no change from before.

Apple does beat out Google in another category, however: smartphone manufacturing. While Google doesn't even manufacture it's own smartphones (the Nexus smartphones are LG's doing via a partnership), Apple ran away with 41.4 percent of the smartphone OEM market in the three-month period ending April 2014. The number is the same as its OS market share because only Apple makes smartphones that run iOS while there are many OEMs creating Android phones.

The trend is mostly reversed overseas, where Google's Android has an incredible lead over iOS; in some areas of the world Android commands over 80 percent of the market. Even Android manufacturers like Samsung outnumber the OEM imprint Apple has in many countries thanks once again to the fact only Apple manufactures iOS.

Samsung is the second-largest smartphone OEM in the United States, accounting for 27.7 percent, while LG followed with 6.5 percent, Motorola with 6.3 percent, and HTC with 5.3 percent.

The comScore data is based off the 167.9 million Americans who own a smartphone. The number represents a 69.6 percent mobile market penetration, a 5-percentage point increase from the three-month period ending in January. What does that mean? More Americans own smartphones than ever before (a pretty obvious trend).

As far as apps go, 3 of the top 5 most used apps are Google's doing. Facebook remains the most popular individual app, with 74.1 mobile reach. Google Play ranks second with a 50.9 percent reach, YouTube third with 49.7 percent, and Google Search fourth with 48.3 percent. Pandora rounds out the top five with a 44.9 percent reach.
