The Los Angeles Shooting

Lt. Raul Jovel from the Los Angeles Police Department said their officers received a call at around 12:55 a.m., reporting that a man was shot on Figueroa Street and Exposition Boulevard.

The said victim sustained a graze wound on his head, and the vehicle he was riding was reported to receive a barrage of bullets, Fox 11 reported. Although wounded, Jovel noted that the victim was able to provide them descriptions about the suspect's vehicle. The victim was transported to a local hospital.

Apart from the first victim, two other victims were also fatally shot by the same suspect in different locations. Authorities identified the two killed victims as Alexis Carbajal, 25; and Mingzhi Zhu, 42.

Mingzhi Zhu, an Uber driver, was shot while he was on his way to pick up a rider. Zhu was reported to be shot dead near Figueroa and 7th streets. Authorities noted that Zhu's SUV was still running when the paramedic has arrived on the scene.

Carbajal was shot dead while waiting for food. The suspect was reported driving up to the side of the victim's vehicle. ABC 7 noted that a surveillance video showed that the suspect opened fire moments later, and the victim was shot in the head.

Carbajal was reported to be with his wife during the incident. But authorities said that the wife was not injured. Carbajal's wife can also be seen in the footage running for help after his husband was shot.

Carbajal was shot 25 minutes later after the officers responded to the first reported shooting. Jovel noted that Zhu was shot about "15, 20" minutes after Carbajal was shot.

The Suspect

Authorities identified the suspect in his early 50s or late 40s. They refrained from giving out the name pending notification of his relatives.

The pursuit with the suspect, which lasted for about three hours, stretched from 601 and 57 Freeways before ending on the westbound 91 Freeway near Raymond Avenue.

The suspect opened fire on police, prompting officers to return fire, NBC Los Angeles reported. The suspect was declared dead at the scene.

"These appear to be random acts of violence... we have no idea what precipitated this," said Jovel in a news conference.

The police shut off all the traffic lanes between State College Boulevard and Raymond Avenue during the standoff on the 91 Freeway.

Authorities recovered a handgun at the scene. Police said no officers were injured in the incident.
