A Florida woman has been criminally charged after her 10-year-old daughter shot and killed a neighbor with whom her mom got into a fight.

According to Crime Online, Lashun Rodgers, 41, and Lakrisha Isaac, 31, were fighting when Isaac gave her daughter a bag that contained a gun. Orlando police said the girl retrieved the gun and fired twice, mortally wounding Rodgers, which led to her death.

The shooting happened just before midnight Monday in the Jernigan Gardens Apartments in the 1400 block of Mercy Drive, Miami Herald reported. Police said Rodgers was taken to a nearby hospital, where she died.

Girl Shot Florida Woman Her Mom Was Fighting With

According to WFTV, friends and neighbors said Rodgers was grilling out and celebrating Memorial Day at her apartment when Isaac, who was drunk, slapped the victim, who hit Isaac back.

Orlando police said the two women then started fighting, and the girl got the gun from her mom's bag and fired two rounds at the victim.

Police said the Florida mom and her kid were both taken into custody. WESH reported that the child was eventually turned over to the Florida Department of Children and Families.

Isaac was charged with manslaughter culpable negligence, child neglect, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and aggravated assault with a firearm. The Florida mom is in jail without a bond. The State Attorney's Office will reportedly determine charges for the child.

A woman named Nana, who claimed to be the victim's cousin, told WESH that she does not believe there's any way to justify the killing of Rodgers since it could not be self-defense. She said the girl should have been in the house at this time of night.

Loved ones had decorated the sidewalk with flowers and wrote messages for Rodgers, whom they called "Bone." Nana noted that it was very devastating as her cousin's death was "for really nothing."

Rodgers' best friend, Stacey Johnson, said her friend was a giving and loving person. Rodger's family and friends noted that Bones was known for giving neighborhood kids money and was loved by her daughter and grandchild, who just had open-heart surgery.

Gun Violence in Florida

As gun violence continues to spread in Florida and the rest of the country, state Democratic lawmakers are looking to expand the state's "red flag" law.

According to News4Jax, the "red flag" law allows the court to confiscate firearms from people who show that they are at risk of harming themselves or others. The law also restricts gun purchases for up to a year.

Lawmakers noted that the red flag law had been enforced in Florida more than 5,000 times since its adoption in 2018. However, it only allows law enforcement officers to go to the court for a risk protection order.

The state's risk protection order policy is a court-mandate to seize firearms and block the sale of guns for up to a year from someone showing signs of violent intent.

Some lawmakers want to expand the said policy law to allow family and friends to petition the court directly. The red flag law has existed since 1999, and it was first enacted in the wake of a mass shooting at a lottery office in Connecticut.
